Station 2 | Jesus is Betrayed

Station 2 | Jesus is Betrayed

Matthew 26:46-50

"Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

Reflection

With a kiss - a cultural sign of deep respect, honor, and devotion - Judas betrayed Jesus. In exchange for this act of disrespect & betrayal, & in full awareness, Jesus still called him friend.

We don't have to look far in our Bibles or in our own personal histories to see betrayal. The ones that are supposed to love & care for us the most can cause the deepest wounds. We are not innocent of such betrayals ourselves. In pursuit of the coins of comfort, power, & control, we are swift to betray even at a great expense to others. We often don't rightly value who Jesus is. Instead of trusting Him & following Him, we betray Him for a few coins.

  • When have you thought of Jesus as a threat rather than a trusted friend?
  • Spend a moment to thank Jesus that even in your betrayal, He calls you friend and acts in your best interest.
