Day 13

Day 13 | October 6

Day Thirteen | October 6

Discover Your Destiny…Like Jacob

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it…and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.’” Genesis 28:16, 22

Today’s passage finds Jacob running from the consequences of his actions and falling asleep at a place called Bethel. While he was asleep, God revealed Himself to him in a deeply personal way. It was then that the God of his fathers became his own personal God. Before we see how this moment changed Jacob’s view on giving, let’s reflect on how God met him there.

God often reveals Himself when we reach the end of ourselves. Jacob’s scheming and trickery brought him nothing but failure and rejection. When he stopped running and fell asleep at Bethel, he had nothing left. It is often when we are at the end of our rope that God reveals Himself most powerfully.

God also reveals Himself when we are alone. Whether Moses tending his flocks in Midian or Isaiah praying alone in the temple, God uses these quiet moments to draw near and speak. These times of solitude are precious opportunities for God to have our full attention.

Jacob’s encounter at Bethel transformed him from a taker to a giver. He vowed to give God a tenth of everything—a practice known as tithing, which was a significant act of worship and trust in his day and remains meaningful today. Personal encounters with God lead to changed lives and transformed hearts.

Even if you haven’t experienced a dramatic “Bethel moment,” know that God is always ready to meet you—sometimes in small, everyday ways—to reveal His presence and call you to trust Him fully.

Reflection Question:

When have you experienced a personal encounter with God that changed how you live or give?

Prayer Focus:

Pray that everyone touched by Gateway will experience a personal relationship with God, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ask God to show you how your giving—whether of time, talents, or treasures—can be an expression of your faith in Him. If you haven’t yet experienced a personal encounter with God, ask Him to meet you at your own “Bethel” and reveal His presence in your life.
