Day Sixteen | October 9

How Much Is Too Much?

“She broke the jar and poured the perfume on His head.” —Mark 14:3b

The scene was unexpected. A woman walks into a room filled with men and breaks open her most prized possession—an alabaster jar of pure nard, worth a year’s wages. The fragrance filled the air. It was an extravagant, shocking display of worship. Some were indignant: “What a waste!” But Jesus wasn’t. He called it beautiful.

This wasn’t just a financial gift. It was a deeply personal one. That perfume may have been her dowry—her security for the future. Yet she gave it all, not out of calculation, but love.

In that moment, she recognized something many others missed: Jesus was worth everything. Her act of worship prepared Him for burial—and left behind a testimony still told today.

We often ask, “How much is too much?” This woman’s act sets a standard of sacrifice that all of us can match. That alabaster bottle was worth a year’s wages. Plus, it was to be saved for the most important occasion of one’s life. What is the most extravagant thing you have done for the Lord? What can we learn from this Scripture?

Real love is always extravagant.

Extravagant love is always criticized.

Jesus always comes to the defense of those who are criticized for being extravagant in their devotion towards Him.

Reflection Question:

When was the last time you gave extravagantly to God—not just financially, but emotionally or spiritually?

Prayer Focus:

Ask God to cultivate hearts in our church that overflow with devotion. Pray that we would offer our time, talents, and treasure with boldness and joy, like this woman did.
