You Make the Call

“All Scripture is God–breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
—2 Timothy 3:16–17

Baseball umpire Durwood Merrill once told a story from his rookie season in the major leagues. It was his first time calling balls and strikes for legendary pitcher Nolan Ryan. The second pitch of the game came so fast, Merrill didn’t even see it. He froze, unsure what to call. Finally, he blurted out, “Strike!” The batter stepped out of the box and said, “Ump, don’t feel so bad—I didn’t see it either!”

That story reflects how many of us feel today. Life is moving at lightning speed, and we’re often unsure how to make the right call. The world is shifting so quickly that it’s hard to keep up—yet we still must make critical decisions, often with limited clarity.

Now more than ever, we need a fixed point—a true north to guide our lives. Thankfully, God has given us exactly that: His Word. The Bible isn’t just ancient literature or moral advice—it is the unchanging, God-breathed truth, meant to guide us in every season.

Some say Scripture is outdated. But Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, “The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

The Bible is our standard for truth. When the world feels unclear, you make the call—but make it based on God’s Word.

Reflection Question:

When you’re faced with uncertainty or major decisions, how often do you turn to Scripture for clarity and direction?

Prayer Focus:

Pray that our Gateway family will become people of the Word—committed to reading, studying, and applying Scripture daily. Ask God to let His truth shape our minds, refine our character, and guide every decision we make.
