Day 33 | October 26
Watch Out for the Dream-Stealers
“…so I sent messengers to them with this reply: ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?’” —Nehemiah 6:3
In 1889, construction began on what would become one of the most iconic structures in the world—the Eiffel Tower. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel, the project was ambitious, controversial, and heavily criticized. Many Parisians saw the iron structure as an eyesore and launched a campaign to stop its construction. Hundreds of artists and intellectuals signed petitions calling it a “monstrosity.”
Despite the outcry, Eiffel remained focused on the vision. He defended the project, not only as an architectural achievement but as a symbol of progress and innovation. Against fierce opposition, work continued. In just over two years, the Eiffel Tower was completed in time for the 1889 World’s Fair. Today, it stands not only as a landmark of Paris but as a testament to vision, resilience, and refusing to let critics derail a dream.
In Nehemiah 6, we see a similar dynamic. Nehemiah had a God-given mission to rebuild the broken walls of Jerusalem. But opposition arose—enemies who tried to distract, intimidate, and discourage him. His response? “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.” He stayed focused and finished the work in just 52 days.
At Gateway, we believe God has placed a great work before us—a vision to increase our reach and deepen our impact. As with any God-sized dream, there will be voices of distraction, fear, or even criticism. But like Nehemiah—and like Gustave Eiffel—we must keep our eyes on the goal and trust the One who gave us the vision.
Reflection Question:
What distractions, fears, or external voices could tempt you to pull back from fully embracing God’s vision for Gateway?
Prayer Focus:
Pray for unwavering focus and unity as we pursue the vision God has given us. Ask Him to silence discouragement and strengthen our resolve. Invite God to show you how He’s calling you to take ownership of the vision with your time, talents, and treasures—for His glory and the good of others.
