The Absurdity of Going Back

“Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?”
—Galatians 3:3

On August 1, 1985, America’s top intelligence officials gathered for a farewell reception at CIA headquarters. But the real buzz in the room wasn’t about the retiree—it was about a stunning development: one of the highest-ranking KGB officers, Vitaly Yurchenko, had defected.

Yurchenko oversaw all Soviet intelligence operations in the U.S. and Canada. After presenting himself at the American Embassy in Rome, he was flown to the United States and taken to a secure location in Virginia. There, he revealed sensitive intelligence that could change the landscape of espionage.

But the most astonishing part came three months later. Disillusioned, lonely, and frustrated, Yurchenko convinced his CIA handler to take him out to dinner in Georgetown. During the meal, he casually asked, “What would you do if I got up and walked off?” The agent replied, “We don’t shoot defectors.” Yurchenko responded, “I’ll be back in 15 to 20 minutes. If I’m not, it’s not your fault.”

He walked out of the restaurant and into the Russian Embassy—effectively "un-defecting." Days later, the world watched in disbelief as he boarded an Aeroflot jet back to the Soviet Union, pausing to wave goodbye to the very freedom he had once chosen.

It seems absurd, doesn’t it? Why would someone voluntarily return to captivity after tasting freedom? And yet, the same thing happens spiritually. The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 3:3 with holy frustration: “After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?”

Many believers start their journey with the joy and freedom of grace, but somewhere along the way, they begin to drift back into legalism or performance-based living. They trade Spirit-empowered freedom for a rule-bound faith rooted in their own efforts.

Why would anyone go back? Yet it happens all the time.

Reflection Question:

In what areas of your life are you tempted to rely on your own strength instead of the grace and power of the Holy Spirit?

Prayer Focus:

Pray that we at Gateway would continue to live Spirit-led lives, not relying on human effort or performance. Ask the God of grace to deepen your relationship with Him and fill you daily with His Spirit, so that you walk in freedom and not in fear.
