Day Four | September 27
God’s Field of Dreams
“He said to them, ‘Listen to this dream I had.’” Genesis 37:6
In the 1989 film Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner plays Ray Kinsella, a quiet Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice telling him, “If you build it, he will come.” Acting on nothing but that voice and a deep inner pull, Ray plows over his cornfield to build a baseball diamond—much to the confusion of everyone around him.
As the story unfolds, we discover that Ray’s dream is rooted in a broken relationship with his father. The field becomes a place of healing, where—through movie magic—he is reunited with his dad for one final game of catch. The plot may be fantastical, and the theology flawed, but the emotional core resonates: we’re all drawn to places where dreams come to life. And while God’s “field of dreams” isn’t found in an Iowa cornfield, it is real. It lives in the hearts of His people and in the church He’s building.
So how can we recognize a dream that’s truly from God? Here are five signs:
- A God-given dream will stir your passion.
- A God-given dream will be beyond what you can accomplish alone.
- A God-given dream will leave a lasting mark on your heart.
- A God-given dream will require strong, stretching faith.
- A God-given dream will face resistance from the enemy.
If you’ve ever sensed God calling you to do something bold or costly, something that stretches your faith and moves you outside your comfort zone—don’t ignore it. As a church, God has given us a dream: to improve and expand our space so we can reach more people with the love and truth of Christ. That dream is bigger than us—and that’s exactly the point.
Reflection Question:
Is the dream I’m chasing fueled by God’s purpose for my life—or something else?
Prayer Focus:
Pray that Gateway will be a true “field of dreams,” where people discover and pursue the God-given calling on their lives. Ask God to unite our congregation around the shared vision to build something greater—not for our fame, but for His glory. Pray that our leaders will have clarity and wisdom in every decision they face. And finally, pray for protection over this dream, knowing that what comes from God will always face spiritual opposition.
