When Your Dream Is Delayed

“‘Here comes that dreamer!’ they said to each other. ‘Come now, let’s kill him…Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.’” Genesis 37:19-20

Joseph discovered a hard truth that every dreamer eventually faces: not everyone will celebrate your dream. In fact, some may criticize it, sabotage it, or try to bury it altogether. Joseph’s own brothers mocked him, threw him in a pit, and sold him into slavery. Can you imagine how confused and discouraged Joseph must have felt as his dream unraveled before his eyes?

Maybe you’ve been there. You believed God gave you a dream—but now everything seems stalled or even lost. Here’s what we learn from Joseph’s story and others like it: every God-given dream must go through a season of death. At some point, it will become clear that it’s impossible to accomplish the dream in your own strength. That’s by design. Why? Because when the dream is resurrected, only God can get the glory.

Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us, “Though it lingers, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” God doesn’t operate on our timelines, but He is never late. His delays are not denials—they are invitations to deeper dependence and unwavering trust. When we run out of resources, ideas, or strength, we are right where God wants us. That’s when He steps in and does what only He can do.

Reflection Question:

Am I trusting God's timing with my dreams, or becoming discouraged because I can't see progress?

Prayer Focus:

Pray that our church will stay faithful to the God-sized dream of expanding our space to reach more people for Christ. Ask for endurance, unity, and joy even in the face of setbacks or slow progress. Pray for strength and patience in your own life as you wait on God’s perfect timing for the dreams He has planted in your heart. Trust that even in delay, He is working.
